Writing Program

As much as possible, we will follow the rituals of the job, completing regular assignments that target a particular audience.

We also will study and imitate modernist and contemporary "units," such as the word approached, for example, etymologically or connotativelythe free verse line, the variable foot, vers libre, serial form, the sentence the "new" sentence, but also modulations of basic syntaxthe paragraph, the page, and forms of call and response.

Students like the focus on the technical aspects of creative writing in the major, as well as how the department encourages community among its students. Finally, we offer graduate students and advanced undergraduates courses in special writing topics such as argument, style, legal writing, and non-fiction narrative.

Much of this course is devoted to learning how to steal the tools of great fiction writing, then to using those tools to realize your own vision.

So did Joan Didion, in Where I Was From; by telling the story of her family, she told the story of California, and by telling the story of California she told the story of the West and thus of America.

We will study and imitate traditional formal approaches, such as the poetic foot, meter, caesuras, sprung rhythm, rhymed stanzas, and refrains.

Where is the aperture of experience. This advanced fiction workshop will examine the ways we write about love in fiction: Students who have not formally declared the major will not receive priority in consent-based courses.

The course will follow a workshop format, with peer critiques of student work and intensive readings across a spectrum of literary aesthetics. This course -- welcoming writers of any stamp -- will explore how composing in rhyme uncovers previously unsuspected pathways in a writer's imagination, and is a powerful editing tool, as well.

This course provides a scholarly context and practical exercises that will prepare graduate students for the challenges of writing-related jobs in institutional contexts ranging from large research universities to small liberal arts schools.

Writing Program Courses The Writing Program specializes in courses geared towards the needs of writers who are experts in scholarly, research, and professional fields. I would even swap papers with my friend who was taking Beginner Fiction Workshop, which functions in a similar way to the Non-Fiction Workshop.

Both in-person and online, courses range from eight-week workshops to one-day seminars that provide craft instruction in a variety of genres, including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and screenwriting.

The College Orientation

The Writing Program provides writing assistance to all University divisions, schools, and academic and administrative programs. We teach for-credit and non-credit.
